Many girls experience Period Poverty—the lack of access to menstrual products, sanitation facilities, and adequate education. A study found that up to 10% of girls in Uganda have engaged in transactional sex so as to be able to afford sanitary towels. Other girls use pieces of old clothes or blankets, chicken feathers, newspapers and mud.

To set girls in Uganda free from period poverty:

1. We give out re-usable sanitary towels to vulnerable girls. To achieve this we partner with schools, churches and community based organisations to identify the most vulnerable girls in need of sanitary towels. The donations are made possible by our partners who donate to our work.

2. We train girls how to make their own re-usable towels. Organisations, schools and churches in need of this training contact us and we go over and train the girls.

3. We sell re-usable sanitary towels to those who can afford. We use the money raised from these sales to make sanitary towels for the vulnerable girls who cannot afford to buy sanitary towels.

Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to menstruation. Access to timely, accurate health information is critical to ending the stigma around menstruation and building a more equitable world. That is why in addition to providing sanitary towel, we also provide comprehensive reproductive health education for adolescent girls, families and entire communities.

Girls who have received reproductive health training know how to care for their bodies and the Alpha Girl Care reusable sanitary towels. The acquired knowledge and skills makes the girls confident to properly manage their menstruation as well be in position to make informed and healthy decisions about their bodies.

The trained girls also know how to take good care of the re-usable towels which guarantees a longer product life for the towels.

We also train boys in menstrual health to end the stigma around menstruation. We have realised that boys trained in menstrual health stop teasing the girls about menstruation and instead become supportive.

To-date we have so far trained 13,000 girls and 400 boys.

Girls who become mothers while still in their teen years experience a lot of rejection from society, the schools, their family and sometimes, even the man/boy who fathered the child.

Without proper counselling and support, many teenage mothers give up on their dreams—including education—and live a life of despair. This loss of hope often lifetime carries with it negative consequences for both the mother and her child.

Through our contacts in the communities, we reach out to teenage mothers, counsel them and support them by providing some of the basic needs for both the mother and her child so as to restore hope.

Becoming a mother while still a child, though unfortunate, should not be the end of life for any girls or her dreams. We want to see every teenage mother back on her feet and pursuing her dreams so as to ensure a bright future for both her and her child.

To-date we have rehabilitated 9 teenage mothers.
